New preprint: Expanding the palette of trehalose-based fluorophores.

A new preprint from the lab is now live on bioRxiv. Led by Adriann Brodeth, supported by Reena, Lilith, and many others, "Expanding the palette of trehalose-based fluorophores for live mycobacterial detection" introduces two far-red trehalose probes, JF635-Tre and JF646-Tre, built from Janelia Fluor® dyes. Both label live M. smegmatis and M. tuberculosis with strong signal-to-background, show sensitivity to metabolic activity, and JF635-Tre can distinguish isoniazid-treated from untreated drug-susceptible Mtb, pointing to utility in drug-susceptibility testing. By pushing the trehalose toolkit into the far-red, the probes open the door to multiplexed mycobacterial imaging. The work was a collaboration with the Swarts Lab (Central Michigan University) and Bio-Techne (Tocris) in Bristol, UK.
